Diaspora Members Travel
to Jamaica to Give Back

JAMPACT members are slated to depart on a one week long service trip on September 12th to distribute items collected for the children of Coles, Crescent Road, Maxfield Park and St. Steven's basic schools in Jamaica. In addition, from their donors, JAMPACT will distribute twenty-six (26) educational scholarships, which will help parents cover their children's tuition for at least one year. This trip, among the other things it commemorates, will also be the official launch of Jamaica Impact International Limited (JAMPACT Jamaica).

On August 4th, JAMPACT members and volunteers gathered at the Trans-continental Express Shippers in Queens, NY, for the packing of all the donated supplies and toys. JAMPACT grossed a record ten (10) barrels and five (5) large shipping boxes of supplies and toys, including computers and teaching aids. The containers of supplies are now awaiting the arrival of the organization's members and supporters, who will distribute the items to the children and their families on the 13th and 14th of September.

The schools adopted by JAMPACT are located in inner-city communities and are usually in great need of support. In addition to the organization's adopted schools, JAMPACT also donated supplies to the Jackson Basic School in Kingston and five computers to Ebenezer Primary School in Manchester.

The Annual Service Trip will allow members and supporters to view firsthand the difference their donations have been making; to assess what more can be done; and to directly make a difference through planned activities. The trip will close out with its signature Scholarship and Recognition Reception on Sunday, September 16, which will also mark the official launch of Jamaica Impact International Limited (JAMPACT Jamaica). At the reception, twenty-six children will receive tuition and general education scholarships. The teachers will also be presented with special recognition gifts. Reception sponsors include Pollyanna Caterers, the reception location, and CIBC FirstCaribbean Bank. The launch of JAMPACT Jamaica will represent a key milestone in the organization as it affirms its commitment to its mission to making an impact in Jamaica, particularly in early childhood education. This commitment to impact include the over USD $100,000 plan to rebuild Maxfield Park Children's Home Basic School, a discussion point for the reception.

JAMPACT invites inquiries and participation in the service trip, which will include some social activities. The Jamaican Diaspora community may continue its support by sending monetary and in-kind donations. Individuals residing in Jamaica may contribute through monetary and in-kind donation as well as participation in the planned activities. Specific trip inquiries may be directed to Fundraising Chair Akelia Lawrence-Maitland at fundraising@jampact.org, Education Chair Tassie Scarlett at education@jampact.org or Membership Chair Georgia McCarthy at membership@jampact.org.

A Letter of Thanks from
Jackson Basic School!

With your help we were able to recently distribute needed school supplies to Jackson's Basic School in Kingston. We could not have done this without your help! Below are their kind words of appreciation:

Thank you for being an important Partner in Public Education. Your generous donation of school supplies to the Jackson's Basic School is greatly appreciated.  Each donated item will be beautifully packaged and lovingly presented to our students.

Your donation will allow us to provide weekly homework packets for the students, something that would otherwise not be possible without your generosity. Thank you for being an important partner in public education.

Consumer Reports Conducted a Study on Prepaid Calling Cards: Are You Getting Your Money's Worth?
Prepaid calls
Many people rely on prepaid phone cards to reach family in other countries. That's why Consumer Reports decided to investigate the cards-and find out if people were getting their money's worth.

Consumer Reports sent secret shoppers to buy more than 130 cards in seven communities in New York State. We made more than 100 calls with the cards as part of our investigation. Click here to read more.
